One Year After my Yoga Teacher Training (YTT)
This time last year, I was packing my bags, boarding a plane, and flying thousands of miles across the world to this magical island off the Gulf of Thailand, where my husband and I spent four amazing, yet challenging weeks at our 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training (YTT).
As we returned home, COVID started to hit, and the world became a scary place. I started working from home. Not knowing if my job was going to be jeopardized, and with yoga studios and gyms closing, I didn’t have high hopes for growing a yoga business.
Coming back from this lively, sunny, warm paradise, to a lifeless, cloudy, cold, place we call home, I felt sadness, and resentment. How could I feel this way, after having the opportunity to spend five weeks in Thailand, with four of those weeks being a life-changing journey that is supposed to find me contentment?
When I started working from home, I began to have more time to really reflect. To reflect on my life, my yoga teacher training, and to figure out where to go from here.
With the world shutting down, and not knowing what was going to happen next, Zoom became the new thing, and people were looking for something to do.
Beginning my journey as a Teacher
I started to teach yoga on Zoom in March, for free, just family, and then opened it up to friends and others. I jumped right in, teaching Monday – Friday, at 7 am. And occasionally evening classes too. When the weather started to warm up, I started offering donation-based yoga at the Park, every Wednesday at 5 PM. Since then, I have been asked by a local yoga studio to teach with them, and a gym-owner. I now teach in multiple locations, still teaching on zoom every day for free, and have gained amazing private clients.
They say a lot of people have self-realization during their YTT, but I felt like the outcast, I didn’t have that experience, I grew a lot in my yoga practice and learned so much more than what I expected to learn, but I didn’t actually feel a shift right away.
Since March 2020, I have taught yoga just about every day, and sometimes 3 times a day. Here we are in January 2021, and I am finally starting to feel that shift. One year after my YTT. Sharing my practice with others who truly connect, has given me a stronger relationship with myself and with others. I have learned to connect deeply with my true self. Letting go of things that no longer serve me, letting go of the past, the future, and staying present. Appreciating all that I have, every day.
Letting go of expectations. And not allowing others to control my emotions.
With a consistent practice of yoga asana’s, meditation, and pranayama, I have gained a calmer mind, an open heart, and love for myself.
And studying and understanding more of the yoga philosophy and living by the Yama and Niyama’s, the ethical guidelines to help guide you through your life journey.
There will always be ups and downs, good days and bad days, unexpected bumps in the road, but yoga has helped me create a better mindset and has allowed me not to react to certain circumstances.
Yoga is just the beginning.
It has been a year full of yoga in the park, yoga in nature, yoga in new places, and yoga with new friends.
